THE EAST KNOYLE ARCHIVES

In 1993, it became clear that valuable memory of the lives of local people were being lost with the passing of time – and some irreplaceable photographs were even being destroyed by younger family members no longer resident in the village.

Following a successful appeal to allow the copying of old photos, a computer-assisted database was established by Anthony Claydon, Mrs Joan Claydon and Mrs Janet Wharton….. The East Knoyle Archive was born.

With the welcome support of many past and present residents, this now comprises:

· The Village Scrapbooks. Volumes I-III produced by the East Knoyle Women’s Institute in the 1950’s. Volume IV was created by the late Major Roger Croxton in 1972 and Volume V by Anthony and Joan Claydon (with a tapestry cover by Mrs Cilla Maine). Much material is being stored for a Volume VI, awaiting a volunteer. If you, the reader, would care to know more, please contact the archivists.

· A photo archive of over 1,000 images, from Victorian times to the present  -each
with its unique reference for easy access.

· Books, documents and artefacts dealing with properties, organisations, people and events within the parish e.g. The Story of the Village Hall, and sale catalogues
of Clouds and the former Knoyle House – a seat of the Seymour family.

All the above may be viewed by appointment, and some may be borrowed for further study.

Wren’s Shop stocks a number of books about the local area; with two ‘The Nature of Knoyle’ and ‘Fillet of Place’ (both published by Hobnob Press) dealing specifically with the village.

It is planned to feature images from the Archive from time to time on this website.
