Royal British Legion

The British Legion organization was instituted, in 1921, by Earl Haig of Bemersyde, to assist ex service men and women, after the Great War and was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1925.

The year 2011 was the 90th Anniversary of the RBL and also of our Branch.  We changed from an unsupported unit to a Legion Branch in May 1921, so our villages have been in it right from the start.  Many of the Public still ask us “ what does the Royal British Legion do now”.

Well, the principal concern is the welfare of serving and ex-Service people and their dependants, with around 10.5 million people in the UK eligible for that support, that is approx. 1 in 6 of the population.  We offer financial aid in an urgent crisis, help homeless  ex-Service people to get back on their feet, advise on compensation, disablement and pension claims. We also offer careers advice and business loans for those looking to make a fresh start after leaving the Forces.  A major part of the welfare work is to provide short and long-term care for ex-Service people and their dependants in the seven RBL Homes around the country, these are fully staffed Homes. As you probably realize, this is only a small part of the Legion work, which is why we are always asking for your generous donations not only at Poppy Appeal time but throughout the year.

It is important to note that the R.B.L. spends  in the region of  36 Million sterling a year on the welfare mentioned and this amount rises each year. Even if all wars finished now, our work would still continue to serve the armed forces who serve our Country.

Our Branch of the Legion hold monthly meetings,   ( First Monday in each Month, except Bank Holidays ), we hold a Service in the Church on Remembrance Sunday. We have Lunch & a Talk approximately every 3 months, together with visits to places of special interest.

Remember, you don’t have to be a service or ex service member to join the Royal British Legion to carry out the aims mentioned above, but just someone who would like to help make life a little easier for those who have suffered through Military Conflict.
